It does. Internet dating works. In truth, the Internet is one of the most popular places to look for love. “1 in 5 singles is currently in a committed relationship with someone they met on a dating site,” states Dating Site Reviews. In fact, more and more couples are meeting online. With the opening of numerous online dating avenues, it is not surprising that people are turning to the Internet to look for their true love.

Online dating does work. There are significant number of people, from all ages, who have met online and are now enjoying being in long-term relationships. Many of these people have gotten married and are really happy together. Admittedly, there are online dating sites that seem “creepy” to some, so it is a good idea to look for reputable dating sites before one creates his online dating profile.

Perfect Match and e-Harmony are just a couple of reputable online sites that you can check out. There are other online sites that are just as reputable and effective in finding people their love matches. Today I want to speak to you about your New Year in Love

What is it going to look like? What is it going to feel like? What is the experience going to be like for you? This is the perfect moment to choose... a perfect moment to start a new love life for yourself.

How would you do that? I would suggest creating a vision and I encourage you to Vision Big.

You can create a vision of love based on your deepest inner knowing of what the experience could be like for you! How would you express your love? How would you express your intellect and your spirit and your physicality?

So to craft your new vision for 2012 I want to encourage you to utilize multimedia. If you are inspired by art create a vision board. It could be out of any material or medium that you so choose. If you are business oriented person make a PowerPoint of your vision for love of in 2012. If you're a musician or musical play your guitar, drums or sing to add your talent into your vision for love in 2012.

Whatever way you choose to express yourself, really create a vision that you can grow into, that you can become more of yourself by experiencing.

Now one thing in making a vision and another in Creating the Reality of that Vision.

You Create Your Vision by keeping it as a Vigil... coming back to it, listening to it, looking at it, reading it... again and again until it becomes real. And as thing start to manifest into reality you check them off or you circle them or you draw a big smiley face on that part of the vision that is actually occurring! So you can hold your vision accountable! You can measure it!!

Now a vision will not work, even if you put the vision together, the music together or the journal together. It will not work if you keep spending your time focusing on what isn't right or what hasn't happened, what your past experiences have been like that were unfulfilling. If you keep your mind in that place, your emotions in that place this new vision cannot take root. It takes incredible discipline to be vigilant about your vision but I know that it is possible for you!!

And I want to encourage you to really go for it this year. For a New Year in Love create a vision and keep it vigil.

This is a really, really big life decision, love decision.

There are two schools of thought.

1- Love What Is…really embrace where you are right now. Still love him. Love and acknowledge him. But as he has wanted to move away from you, you let him go. And you just allow what wants to occur. Whether that be new energy coming in for you that is loving, or maybe he will reflect and come back to you.

This is the way of flow. This is the way of ease. It is actually a Light Path.

2- Then there is another school of thought that is Fight for What You Want. Fight for this love. Get back in there and let this man know how much you really want to be in relationship with him. Fight for what you have that you know that it is real. You can get through things. This one obstacle is not the end of your love. It is actually the beginning of how well you can open up and grow and maybe develop each of your skills that would support you in loving even more. You may have to go to therapy but you get in there and you fight for what you want.

This is a Denser Path. Because you don’t know if one fight will end up being multiple fights and you never feel like you get out of the ring. That is a valid path. Each one of them are valid paths.

I want to leave you with this. Magic occurs for us when we follow the energy that brings us life, that brings us vitality, that brings us excitement. That allows us to be more of who we really are. Magic doesn’t occur for us when we do things that drain us, that exhaust us, that demand, over and over, that we do things that are difficult.

I want you to have a Magical Experience in love so I encourage you to follow the energy that will energize, revitalize, make you feel more that who you were in the beginning, make you feel more of yourself, more fully fulfilled.

And don’t follow the energy that drains you, that frustrates you, that exhausts you, and makes you feel less confident, less supported, less loved. You want to leave that behind.

And so I want to take a moment to talk about that because as we acknowledge the love that is

here for us now it provides the support for more love to grow.

I want to take this moment to acknowledge Self-Love. How do you love yourself? That is such an important part of the whole love equation. How are you loving yourself? How are you honoring yourself? How are you respecting yourself? Take that love into account, that love that is present.

I also encourage you to acknowledge family love. Loving Family Relationships that have been there for you through time. Take this moment to acknowledge them.

Also your Friends, the loving friendships that you have that have seen you through ups and downs and different stages of your life.

The Colleagues that you share with on a regular basis that you laugh with that you create with, that you work hard with. Acknowledging those relationships.

This week I received several questions about when is the right timing to sleep with someone. Should I sleep with him, should I not? When I sleep with him he doesn't call me. These kinds of questions. I wanted to get right to the point of when is the right time to sleep with someone.

What are you seeking out of this particular relationship? Do you just want to have a good time? Is sharing yourself with that person telling them you love them and you are ready to commit? It is very different for men and women. Women, when you sleep with someone it is like you are mated with that person. You might think that you disconnect as easily as a man but that is not the case. As soon as you share your body with a man, you feel bonded to that person. It might not necessarily be the same for the man. He may more easily be able to move on and disconnect emotionally.

There is a three step process in determining whether this is the time for you to sleep with someone.

1-how well do you know this person? Is he healthy in the context of his other relationships?

2-Have you developed a level of trust that you would be safe emotionally and physically in this situation?

3-What does it mean for you, and what does it mean for the other person to share that sexual encounter? Does it mean the same, because if it does then you are on the right track. If it doesn't mean the same then that is what is going to cause the pain, stress and confusion--

Why isn't he calling me? Why isn't he texting me?

What happened here? It's that you don't have the same context and reason for bonding with each other sexually.

I encourage you to really take this to heart. I want you to be very clear with yourself before you even get close to a sexual encounter of checking in on all three things. If you don't have them, then you know it's like throwing dice, you may get something great and you may not.

If you want a one night stand, then be okay with someone not calling you, someone not texting you again.

You need to be on the same page and that will ultimately give you what you want.

Sounds like you have been faced with your share of Unconscious Love Behaviors in relationships. This is what will turn any relationship downhill.

Unconscious Loving Behavior can show up as:

Words not matching actions
Lack of follow through
Lying

What I want to say to you is that number one to get back in the scene again you have to leave the baggage behind. You need to get very, very clear about how that relationship served you. What did you learn from it? How were you inspired to become someone different from it? What did being with someone controlling and being in a terrible relationship teach you? Come out with the gold. Come out with the gifts.

That is the starting point for you for getting back into the dating scene.

So once you have that clarity and you come in fresh with all this new knowledge, al this new insight and all this empowerment then secondly you need a relationship makeover meaning discovering who you are as a lover today. Advice Relationship Ask Karinna: Betrayal of Trust

When someone has betrayed your trust in a relationship it feels like someone has punched you in the stomach and it feels absolutely terrible.

Depending on the level of intimate relationship you have with this person or persons, will determine how deep you feel the betrayal. For instance, if it is an acquaintance you would say "oh, that was wrong". But if it is a best friend or a spouse or a partner or really a tight colleague you will feel like your foundation has crumbled as your most intimate relationships make up your support system.

Most people will betray your trust because they are afraid of your truth. And I want you to really remember that.

Some suggestions for dealing with the betrayal of trust:

First, assess the situation. Determine what the betrayal was and how it was executed. Before you do anything else, just discover what it was. Before you talk to anyone. What was it? How are you getting this information? How do you know that this betrayal actually occurred?

Second, confront the situation. Make the person or people that betrayed your trust very aware through clear communication that you know what is happening.

Third, give them the opportunity to come clean. For the record is this true or not true? You ask for the reason why. Know that you may not get the real truth so you have to be prepared for that. If the party or parties answer that they don't know why it happened. Then you are dealing with people that are not connected to their own truth.

Last, ask for a remedy. Whether it is an apology or an acknowledgement or going to couples coaching or a proposed solution. Request this. Then you ask them if they are prepared to give that to you.

Often when people betray another person, they feel entitled or they blame the other party for why they betrayed you. When you get their response of how prepared they are to give you what you need in terms of a remedy you will know their level of value for you and their level of commitment to your relationship.

Do not back down from asking or expecting the truth and respect. It is the only way you can genuinely have a healthy love and a healthy life.

Relationship Issues: Why is Love Difficult

Why is love so difficult? Why can't it be easier to love someone?

Love in itself is not difficult. The absence of love is what is difficult. And we find ourselves in relationships where there are areas that one or both partners cannot love themselves, to value who they are authentically and value the person authentically. So that is what creates strife, stress and hardship in a relationship, that lack of truly loving oneself.

So if your relationship....your love life is stressed out, difficult, tiresome and challenging all the time. Then it's because you or your partner has not done enough work on the LOVER in yourself.

The LOVER is not just what you can do in the bedroom. The LOVER knows how to love....how to be in relationship. They know how to listen...they know how to receive the other person...they know how to support another human being. Being a LOVER also translates into the bedroom: The skills you have for being with someone else's body intimately....for being present....for being sensitive to what the other person needs.... to feel turned-on and excited....to experiment and grow.

These are ways of getting to know and to love the LOVER in oneself, which makes it so much easier to love. And, that's what makes a relationship flow and gives it ease.

What makes love difficult is when one person has decided:

Dating Disappearance

Today I'm going to answer a question that I get all the time about disappearing. Often in the dating process one person disappears.

They may disappear once for 48 or 72 hours. They may disappear for a couple of weeks or they may disappear altogether. This creates incredible distress, hurt, confusion and pain. It has become a chronic issue over the last 10 years.

One of the core fundamental reasons it happens is because we have become so reliant on technology to communicate through. We very rarely use the telephone and even more rarely do we wait until we see each other to communicate. So these quick sound bites in communication either through texting or e-mail or even skype chat can be confused for a real conversation.

We have also become very quick to disconnect. For the person this is happening to, they actually start to feel disposable.

There is a portion of people who disappear that just feel overwhelmed, and they can't manage every single thing in their life and so they manage by just not communicating, just dropping the conversation. It is a really, really bad habit.

While everything cannot be a priority in your life, people must be priorities. It doesn't matter if this is a person that you just started dating or someone you have developed a relationship with for 3 months or someone that you've been involved with for years.

Another portion of people that disappear are very self centered. And basically highly value their own experience over someone else's. It is a statement about skill level of that person as a partner, where they’re interest lies and the value that they place on relationships in the personal arena.

I really recommend that you take a long look at your relationships and where you can step up in your communication.

This frees up energy for both people to move on. When you don't communicate, when you don't respect the other person, when you don't close the circle, it leaves so much energy hanging. And it does create a lot more animosity, a field of conflict and ultimately gives you a bad rap!

For those people who are experiencing disappearances in their love life I recommend that any time you even sense that it is occurring…. you name it ….you call it for what it is …..and you communicate that you are not going to accept that kind of behavior. It is not on the level of which you want to be in a relationship.

Tiger-Our Healthy Reaction to An Unhealthy Situation

I keep getting asked, what do you think of Tiger's behavior? It seems to come up in almost every conversation over the last few weeks.
Here are my thoughts.

Honor
I get really tired of hearing excuses about a high profile public figure's dishonorable conduct, especially of the sexual nature, the latest being Tiger Woods.

If you found out that your favorite neighborhood chef/restaurateur that you had spent hundreds of hours at and lots of money over the years had lied and stolen money on an ongoing basis from his customers and business partners while they in good faith backed him and opened up additional restaurants in his name would you feel enthusiastic about eating at his restaurant again knowing that the person was a crook? Would that food nurture you anymore?

Many people believe that business fraud and spousal sexual infidelity are not equal offenses but in fact they very much are, there is a contractual relationship with promises on both sides to keep the agreement. When one party lies, cheats, steals from the other that is an equal and intolerable offense. Dishonorable conduct whether in sexual dynamics, business or otherwise should be a disappointment and encourage us to ponder deeply our own conduct and the people in whom we place our admiration. Instead of excusing such behavior because we think it's old fashioned to care about betrayals of other human beings, we need to stop and say, "no that is unacceptable." "I want my conduct and my role models to be honest, to be ethical, to be honorable, and to demonstrate integrity. I want to feed myself and those around me with something healthier for our families, communities, and world."

Real
Public Figures are Public Servants. If a person has sought the spotlight through showing off a skill or persona-they have sought to be a public figure and public figures serve the public on a grand scale whether that be an entertainer, athlete, politician, spokesperson. Public figures have agreed to have an intimate relationship with thousands if not millions of people-they want the public to invest in them (in watching, listening, taking action, and purchasing products). And as we get to know them, if we like them and their offering, we do. This is a form of intimacy just as a committed personal relationship is a form of intimacy.

All we ask are for our public figures to be real.

We are A-OK with diversity. A one size fits all lifestyle is not what we are looking for. The public figures that communicate who they really are, whether we agree with their life choices or not, such as forthright polygamous Kurt Russell, married, turned gay Elton John, hippie turned conservative Muslim Cat Stevens, bisexual Lindsey Lohan and porn star Jenna Jameson we can embrace them or choose not to. We can make a choice of our preferred public figures that are aligned with our interests and who we wish to be.

But what we do not have tolerance for in the public is someone who shows the public a certain persona and is far from it. Tiger showed us warm, dotting new husband, father, family man and he lived something very different. Tiger Woods is a playboy. This was Tiger Woods failure, failure to himself, to his wife, to his children, to the public. He discredited himself. We all have the broken intimate relationship with Tiger Woods.

Entitlement
Last night I went to a screening of the award winning film The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo. The film at one point interviewed soldiers who had and were still brutally raping women and when asked by the film maker, "why they did it?" They said two things, because they had a need (they were entitled) and that raping would help them win the battle. War made these soldiers feel entitled to their devastating and dishonorable conduct.

Tiger's #1 Golfer status and his billion dollars in earnings made him feel entitled to his dishonorable conduct of infidelity bringing woman after woman to him to feed his need and for fuel to win another battle, another tournament.

Correlation-ego-centric drives, dishonorable sex with women- the means, outcome- irreversible pain.

Repair
Spousal lying and cheating is not something to become complacent about. My heart goes out to his wife Erin and their children. My advice to you, don't make a quick decision. Seek at least 6 months, if not more, of counseling to decide what your next steps need to be. Don't forget this is your journey too. Make it as conscious and growth-oriented as possible in the midst of your pain. And focus on your own empowerment and place in the world. Tiger I wish you honesty, a coming to your knees bold look at yourself and a soul and sexual healing. Trust isn't built easily but it is always very difficult and time consuming to repair. I hope you will take up the challenge

An Inspiring Couple: Patrick Swayze & Lisa Niemi

Patrick Swayze has been in the news a lot recently due to his health issues, but I'd like to take a moment to point out what the media should also be talking about-- his inspiring, long-time marriage to Lisa Niemi. The two have been married since 1975 and he credits her support and friendship to a lot of his happiness and success over the years and also states that her strength and commitment has helped him get through the "challenges" too.

He even told the media that he had a "special relationship" with Lisa even before their marriage. The "Dirty Dancing" star said that he had lived her for a year before they had sex, although it was a tough task to accomplish, as they were sharing the same bed.

"We were friends for a long time before we became lovers. We even lived and slept together for a year before we had sex. That wasn't easy," Swayze said.

"I never took part in all that locker-room banter about sexual conquests. All those guys who say they go out every weekend looking for women usually wind up getting drunk and never ending up with anyone," the actor added, "I had somebody real to go home to. That was more important to me than sex, even though I missed it."

But luckily the wait was worth it and the two have now been together for 34 years--so far-- and I wish them many, many more!

Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins: Family and Couple Activism

When you think of conscious-minded, empowering, activist role model couples Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins definitely come to mind-- for their work with everything from AIDS awareness, to working in soup kitchens and supporting their personal political beliefs is not a secret-- yet it's when they decided to balance their "activist roles" with their families needs for awhile that made me look up to them even more...

Their biggest community service project during this time is to put their children first when they are most in need of them. "I wish I did more, but I feel my family's needs are a priority," Susan said in an interview with Laura Sheaden for Beliefnet.com, "I'm not comfortable with the idea of serving the many and ignoring my family. In the bigger picture, I see myself getting more and more involved as they leave the nest and don't need the daily attention." Susan and Tim did start a great family tradition though to teach their children the "joy of service." When their children each turned 16 they marked the occasion by doing something involving community service-- which the children decided on.

What a great tradition-- and role model couple-- for others to follow! They're definitely showing people that it's not that you can't do it all, you just have to find the balance in doing it all at once.

Oprah and Tyra Banks both did shows yesterday about the disturbing relationship between singers Riahanna and Chris Brown and why these two troubled souls should not be role models. I agree. Why? It's simple. People who love you shouldn't hit, demean, or abuse you in any way. Period. There is no way to justify otherwise. And people who do try to justify it need help with their own self-esteem issues. Both Riahanna and Chris Brown deserve to be loved, honored, cherished, and valued-- but not until they first learn to love themselves and not want to hurt each other (or anyone else, ever).

My wish for them is to find that. And I'm glad both Oprah and Tyra agree...

How was The Bachelor's Discernment?

Hi Everyone,

I don't know if any of you watch ABC's, "The Bachelor" but I have this season. For me it is a somewhat entertaining case study on how a person chooses a partner that is or isn't really compatible for them.

Last night, The Bachelor Jason Mesnick asked Melissa to marry him in the Finale of the show. However less then 15 minutes later on "After the Final Rose" he said he was ending it with Melissa because he didn't feel they had the right chemistry after all.

Well he should have asked me because it was clear that while Melissa was a lovely and very loving young woman and they cuddled well together they did not have enough of a Yin Yang dynamic--which is actually what chemistry is --the compounds of (Yang) fire and water(Yin) that creates steam and the ultimate dynamic relationship. Jason is actually a yin water personality-quiet, solid, steady and Melissa is very much a yin personality fluid, receptive, soft, easy going. While they looked cute together and seemed to get along well, what Jason needed was to pick a woman with a personality that was more firey than his own which is the why he was so attracted to Molly. She wasn't afraid of taking charge, trying new things, going the extra mile. She lite him up and you could see it on his face when he was with her.

I for one was disappointed that Jillian the 2nd runner up from Canada was not picked. She actually possessed both strong yin and yang qualities. She was successful, fun, honest, and knew who she was a lot more than the final two that he choose. But Jason told her in the end that he didn't know if he could keep up with her and I absolutely believe he told Jillian the truth. However it was fascinating that Jillian actually did not want to believe that. When she was on the "Women Tell All" show to discuss the events she said that she believed what he said was an excuse and if he really wanted to be with her he would have. Wrong! This is what women do so often-they say I don't believe him-when the man has actually told the truth which keeps women on a path of chasing and picking men that are completely not right for them and that don't want to be in a relationship with them.

I believe that Jason is still developing. He is a young man that needs a young, developing woman to be by his side and both Molly and Melissa are that. I think he made the right decision to say he made a mistake quickly (saving everyone alot more heartache) and take a chance with reapproaching Molly. I actually think their chemistry just might work for both of them.

As for Jillian--My advice is Aim Higher!-You deserve it and you can have it!! Empowered ladies take note!

Hotels are running full, priests and beauty parlours are booked and caterers are outsourcing services as more than 5,000 couples line up to get married on Valentine’s Day in the capital of India’s Hindi heartland. Priests said that’s a conservative estimate.
It's not just love that’s made the couples zero in on February 14. There’s a more traditional reason too. “The planetary combinations that day are just right for a wedding — the union will be stable and happy," said Ashok Kumar Mishra, a priest. “That’s why so many people are planning to get married on February 14.”
“The planets get into their most suitable positions at the stroke of midnight," he said. "Weddings solemnised at midnight or just after that would be most successful. We priests have our hands full.”
Another priest, Anurag Gaur, said: “I have been flooded with requests to solemnise weddings on February 14. I have accepted three and rejected nearly 15. There are favourable planetary combinations on other days, too, but the combination with Valentine’s Day is a hit with the youth.”
“Usually, we book three or four weddings,” said wedding organiser Jameel Shamsi. “But this year, the rush on February 14 is maddening. We are handling almost 30 weddings on February 14 and 16.”
Other allied services are in demand, too. For instance, many have asked organisers to arrange theme-based ceremonies, and florists have orders worth lakhs of rupees.
“Disc jockeys and bands are overbooked,” said Rahul Saxena of Ram Krishna Tent House. “I have called for DJs from adjacent cities.”

I wonder what you think about the couples here--meeting someone that shares your same spiritual faith. I think that spiritual compatibility is very important--that means that you share or can complement and grow from each others POV about the universe and your place in it. I think meeting a mate at a spiritual gathering is a fine idea-however don't leave out all the rest of the equation-physical chemistry, emotional development and mental curiosity and compatibility and if you will just have fun together. Just a couple of generations ago, the church was the social center of any community. More important, it was the most efficient way to meet your future mate. You could get your parents' approval, your pastor's approval and God's approval, all under one roof. It didn't hurt that you could see if the candidate cleaned up well, either.
Today's singles have many more options. But their house of worship remains a reliable matchmaker. The World's Largest Block Party, hosted by Old St. Patrick's Church, is a singles magnet: It's responsible for 80 marriages so far.

Advice: Meet people at weddings. "Do research on who might be there, and tell the bride and groom that you're interested in meeting someone. They can seat you accordingly, so you won't be stuck at the bad singles table. The bride and groom are feeling the love; they want to share the love!"
It's rare to find a house of worship that doesn't organize a youth ministry or singles group. St. Gertrude's Parish in Edgewater even sponsors activities for their gay and lesbian Catholic members.
Gerald Stroud and Christy Wong met last year at a college study group at Chinese Christian Union Church North in Highland Park. They were friends for several months before getting romantic.
For them, the church has served as couples therapy. "Church teaches positive moral things," Stroud says. "So for couples, you learn about love and that marriages, friendships and relationships should be based upon the foundations of what love entails, things like patience and kindness."
Wong, 24, lives in Buffalo Grove and works for a local publishing house. Her sister is dating someone she met at church, too.
Stroud, 23, of Gurnee is a part-time college student and meets once a week with his church "accountability partner." He's like a big brother, available to talk about relationship struggles. "They're usually younger than parents and have been through the relationship scene," Stroud says.
Stroud and Wong knew they shared the same values from the beginning. "In our church, we're taught to take relationships slow, exercise self-control, and save sex until marriage," Stroud says.
Purity also is vital to Bruce Lacy and Debra Krich, who met through Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington. They dated for two years before Lacy proposed in January -- in church. "We made it this far and really want to be able to say 'I do' knowing 'we didn't' yet," says Krich, 49, of Cary.
Before they met, she and Lacy, 54, of Algonquin were both content to be single. They got to know one another while serving together in the church's divorce recovery ministry. "Dating this way is so much cooler, and has the amazing component of the shared reality of Jesus in the midst of it all," Krich says.
Her friend April Burns says the range of men at church is the same as in the secular world. "We have our strengths and struggles just like the rest of the world," says the 43-year-old Schaumburg resident. "But we also have sources of truth in the Bible, Holy Spirit and God."
The men she's met through church have done some soul searching, so they seem to have more depth, says Burns. "They understand the concepts of forgiveness, mercy and grace," she says.
Dr. Steven Sims, 42, attends New Community Covenant Church in Logan Square. "My bias, unashamedly, is that church is a great place to meet people," says the South Loop bachelor. But it can be distracting when someone is passing you their number down the pew.
"The danger is when the search for a spouse eclipses a desire to cultivate a relationship with God," says Sims. "I also think anyone searching for the 'perfect' mate should look elsewhere. Genuine church is comprised of flawed people in need of grace and compassion and seeking to move forward together."
Church is a healthy place for couples to meet, says the Rev. Ted Curtis of Grace Episcopal Church. "Church is all about relationships with God, and by extension, relationships with each other," he says.
"It's common sense to keep your eyes open at church," says Noel Jones, founder of faithmate.com, a Christian matchmaking site. "Church is an icebreaker. Before you know it, you're talking to somebody."
That doesn't guarantee the relationship will succeed. "You have as much divorce in church as you have out of church," Jones says.
Patrick Shaffer, 33, the pastor of Hyde Park's City of Faith Christian Church, is single but doesn't date his congregation. "I don't know if being a Christian alone is enough to hold two people together," he says. "You want to meet someone who has myriad interests in common with you."
But he won't rule it out for finding a mate. "If you can find love of God in church and God's love in someone else, then you've been blessed."

Ted and Gayle Haggard-Role Models?

I saw Ted Haggard and his wife Gayle on Larry King last night.

It seems like he/they have done some soul searching and repair work. She seems like a saint. That is well…I'm not sure.

I have some big thoughts about ministers who pound people with their opinions about sex, when they should have or not have sex and who they should or should not have sex with and then turn around and do the very thing that they are preaching against.

But the worst for me is Ted going after young men in his church such as Haas who has said following his hidden relationship with Haggard, there was a period of isolation, struggles with drinking, drugs and suicide attempts.

Compassion and forgiveness were thrown around in last night’s interview alot. They are easy words but how do you make up for screwing with a young person’s head and body which often takes decades to get over it, if ever.

Yes, I believe that you can process your painful experiences and abuses of power in the case of Haas with the help of good counselors and heal, but after how long. Or in Haggard’s case process the dichotomy and destructive behavior and become more conscious about who you are but after what cost to so many others.

In general I think Evangelicals are hesitant to talk through their sexual identity with anyone and are generally weary of counselors outside of church environments because they believe anything other than marital heterosexual sex in un-Christian. I think this narrow parameter of acceptable sexual activity is the crux of so many sexual distortions leading to sexual deviance.

If anything from the interview last night I hope that Haggard brought to light the importance and aide of good therapy to relieve wrestling with sexuality and personal demons. That is what Ted professed had happened for him.

Gayle Haggard seemed strong. Ted seemed clearer. They seemed united in their marriage after coming through a major, horrifying chapter of betrayal and abuse that affected their relationship and many others.

Role Models? You tell me.

A couple of weeks back I told you that in Jan. I would begin blogging on some of the most controversial and provocative intimate ideas out there in 2009 and I am ready to start. What I feel is the most provocative intimate idea worthy of addressing is our often dominant cynicism about having successful relationships.

We don't tend to see many relationships that look and feel sucessful to us so it is natural to believe that there are only a handful out there or the ones we do see we believe those guys are "the lucky ones." Well, I want to challenge you to break through these kinds of thought forms and "out for you" many and many more wonderful relationships that will make you believe in the real possibility of love that can happen for you. What I am most inspired to share with you to begin 2009 are role model couples that will inspire and challenge us to have richer experiences in our relationships. Each week I will be scouting the world to feature couples who are passionate about life and each other, who are great partners, and who may also be community, national or global role models too. In addition, I will also be posting some couples that are worth questioning whether they are role models for us or not.

Please feel free to post your comments and photos in my blog of your favorite role model couples (it can even be you and your loved one) so that we can see lots of images and hear many stories of successful relationships that will help us envision better, more loving, more fun, more inspiring relationships today.

The Farm Show is a 75-year-old Central Vermont tradition, but one pair makes the show look like the new kid in town.
Arlene Dodge beams, "We have a lot to be thankful for."
George and Arlene Dodge are each 90 years old, and travel to the Farm Show each year from their home in South Royalton to man a booth promoting the famous World's Fair in Tunbridge. George was a dairy farmer and used to show cattle there. He says, "I don't know that I ever missed a fair."
They raised four kids and are now great-great grandparents. The Dodges credit their kids and grandkids for helping them stay in their home and helping drive them around, especially when the weather is bad.
The couple will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary this year and have some simple advice for young couples. Arlene Dodge says, "Just learn to communicate."
When asked if he's still very much in love, George Dodge says, "I'd say yes." His wife Arlene Dodge pipes up, "I wanted to hear that answer!" She adds, "I think we're as much in love as ever."
The Dodges are active in their church and say friends and family keep them feeling young. They have a good sense of humor, even using walking aids with signs that herald the arrival of "Gorgeous George and Adorable Arlene." They are both those adjectives and more, and are already looking forward to warmer weather and another Tunbridge World's Fair.
When asked if she'll be at the fair in September, Arlene Dodge chirps, "I hope so!"
They'll be there, as always, together.

Hail to the New Chief and the First Lady in Love!

I, like so many Americans and world citizens, am very impressed by our new president and first lady for many reasons and am very excited for this new era in American leadership. However, as you know, I am not a political commentator but a relationship one, and so to mark the beginning of this wonderful new couple in the White House I thought I would comment on my perception of what they are currently modeling as a couple for all of us to witness.

I think that President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama model a relationship we haven't seen in the American White House for, well, maybe ever in any of our lifetimes.

The Empowered Healthy Man and The Empowered Healthy Woman standing side-by-side, united in love, in partnership, in family, and in service to something much greater than themselves-- the community, the country, and the world.

Yes, we have witnessed one or several of these elements in past presidential couple's relationship dynamics to greater or lesser degrees. Certain unifying elements that stand out in recent presidential couples are, for instance, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's partnership and service commitment, Ronald and Nancy Reagan's love and partnership, Bill and Hillary Clinton's united commitment to service, and our most recent Bush couple seemed united in their love and family.

And while each of these former presidential couples had their uniting stand out qualities, none seem to come close to what Barack and Michelle exhibit together both in love and at work. So let's break down just exactly what qualities are being exhibited by them that creates such a refreshing and inspiring relationship.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama Model:

* Individual Strength and Integrity
* Development of Their Own Character, Passions and Abilities
* Real Partnership with Each Other
* A Shared Commitment to Service
* Consideration, Grace, Thoughtfulness, Respect to Each Other and to Others (including those who do not share their sensibilities or ideas)
* Great Chemistry
* Being In Love
* Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, and Mental Health

This Means:

* They each communicate Individual Strength and Integrity, meaning the ability to stand strong alone. They don't need each other to make themselves whole. They are whole and share a greater whole, healthy relationship because of it.
* They know who they are. They have spent years in Development of Their Own Character, Passions and Abilities. This contributes to their sense of purpose and lightness of spirit.
* They are comfortable sharing power. They naturally are comfortable in a side-by-side, shared power position. They exhibit Real Partnership with each other. They work easily as partners, listening to one another and asking for each other's opinions.
* Each one of them throughout their school and work careers have had a solid focus of a great Commitment to Service for their Communities and Country.
* They express Consideration, Grace, Thoughtfulness, and Respect to each other when they are in each other's presence and when they are not. They also express incredible consideration to others, including those who do not share their sensibilities or ideas, such as throwing John McCain a dinner in his honor before the inauguration and walking the Bushes to their plane to leave Washington-- both gestures unheard of.
* They naturally have Great Chemistry which leads me to believe they have fulfilling intimacy.
* After many years of marriage it is wonderful to see that they are In Love. This is something that cannot be faked. It either is or it isn't there-- and I am certainly happy that it is truly present for them.
* You can witness their Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, and Mental Health commitment as they each work out, are emotionally communicative and receptive, each have and demonstrate deep spiritual faith, and they love to learn and keep educating themselves mentally. This shared total health dynamic makes for a truly great relationship.

For me Maya Angelou on the "Tavis Smiley" show on January 19th summed it up perfectly when she talked about what a real man and what a real woman are. . . "You can know when a MAN is in the room-- a man may be five feet tall and white and old, he may be Asian, he may be six feet... You know that a MAN is in the room...that means you are not going to be insulted, you will not be in any way hurt; A MAN is not going to shout at you. An old male may do anything... Truth. A WOMAN too... A WOMAN is going to be kind, not indulgent, but kind, a WOMAN-- not if she is an old female she may be anything-- they can be a hag, rude, mean and cruel... A WOMAN knows enough to take responsibility for the time she takes up and the space she occupies and that is true of a MAN too."

In our new First Couple I sense the natural understanding of what a real woman and man are.

As we witness President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama now they are a role model couple for all in love. I encourage you to contemplate what this relationship dynamic looks and feels like to inspire you in your own relationship to reach an even higher standard of loving partnership.

What are your thoughts on the John Edwards scandal?

Dear D.,

During John Edwards' campaign for President, I saw him speak twice in person. I thought he was passionate and communicated sincerely and effectively about the issues facing the United States and also spoke convincingly of his plans for addressing them as the next President of America. Ultimately, I was not an Edwards supporter, but I liked him-- his presence engendered admiration.

A big part of his appeal was the feeling that he was a good person, an honest person, a family man who was there for his wife as she repeatedly battled through cancer and a man who cared greatly for his country. That image was shattered last week when the story was disclosed of his affair and possible child with another woman. Why?

Why-- when many people have affairs, both women and men-- do we think it's a big deal that John Edwards did?

Here is why:

A man or woman that betrays a spouse by having a secret affair first harms themselves. They lead double lives. They leave a life of integrity and internal wellbeing to live a disconnected life run by their secrets. By deceiving their spouses and their families they break trust for years or even a lifetime. A spouse can become sick when they "feel" that something is off and are being told lies (perhaps this played a part in the illness that befell John Edward's wife, Elizabeth, twice). And betrayal by a parent (who is also a public figure) can bring shame on the members of the family-- the children suffer ridicule from their peers and can have emotional scars for years.

While this is damage enough, that is not where it ends here.

John Edwards choose to run for the highest office of government knowing that his "secret affair" could be found out. Besides knowing that he could jeopardize his own image and the wellbeing of his family, he let thousands of people invest in him with their time, expertise, money, and other resources for his campaign to get elected knowing that his secret affair-- if found out-- would end it all. And he chose to let millions of Americans believe him to be a person who he wasn't. He also chose not to have care or concern for the Democratic Party-- for if he won the nomination, it would have ended any chance of winning the election. In general, he betrayed the country as a whole.

He betrayed himself. He betrayed his wife. He betrayed his children. He betrayed his campaign workers. He betrayed the Democratic Party. He betrayed America.

Why would you want to care about anything he had to say again?

What could he have done to stop the perpetuation of lies and betrayal and instead strengthen his image and all the good work that he had wanted to do?

First he could have been honest with himself about his dilemma. He then could have told his wife he was struggling with sexual feelings for this woman and they could have sat down and decided together what to do... to put more energy into their sex life, to get help from a sex therapist, agree to an open marriage, commit to their marriage being "a business arrangement or separate." Third, he could have sat down with his wife and children (of an appropriate age, thirteen or older, and possibly with a counselor) to discuss what decisions their parents were making (kids are smart and they know the truth anyway). Fourth, he could have been upfront from day one of pursuing his run for office; he could have given the people planning to work with and for him, his party, and the public a "heads up" such as, "In order for this not to threaten the campaign, I am going to share information about my private life before we start. My wife and I have agreed to a marriage of convenience," or, "My wife and I have discussed that I have had an affair and we are working through our options for what type of relationship we want to have. We don't know what track we're going to take yet."

However, that kind of healthy communication and decision making would require real integrity and in fact, the character of a real leader. But I believe that America would actually be refreshed by this kind of high level, candid honesty and come out and enthusiastically Cheer!

Note: If you feel that you're facing this type of relationship challenge in your own life, have respect for both yourself and your partner and get help beforehand to prevent it from happening. A good first step would be to listen to "Fireworks in Your Love Life" to reignite the passionate spark and trusting connection in your current relationship no matter what stage or critical point you might be at.

One reason this song was so popular, and is still so recognizable, is that so many individual and couples feel this way. When was the last time you had fun as a couple?

If it is has been awhile, then we can say two things about you with a high degree of accuracy:
1. You are part of a very big club, and
2. The two of you are drifting apart.

It's so easy to get caught up in the hecticness of life that we forget to have fun with our partner. Before we know it, we have grown apart and don't have a clue how it happened. As a couple, make a list of all the things you like to do for fun. The list can include things you usually do together as well as thing you usually do apart. Then begin to pick things from the list, find a time to do them, and then do them.

Sounds simple doesn't it? I guess I could make it more complicated for you, but why? The couple that laughs and plays together has a much better chance of staying happy and staying together.

Dear Karinna,

I just got a bad case of urinary infection that I am recovering from. I found out that these infections frequently reoccur and are often related to vaginal fluids entering the urethra during sex, but I also read that using sexual positions with less friction on the urethra may help to prevent this. Can you suggest some of these positions? Any other advice on this matter would also be most welcome. Many thanks.
